Screaming Tongue

Monday, May 12th, 2008

screaming tongue inked

I’m liking this character. I’ve drawn several variations, like this guy:

Daily Doodle #5

And these guys:

panel 1

Are they an entire race of screaming tongues, or is one the main screaming tongue and his name is Fred, while all the others are simply non-screaming tongues? These are the types of things that I need to figure out in building this webcomic. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

Well, crap

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

My friend Dan pointed out that Kung Pow: Enter the Fist had a screaming tongue in it named “Tonguey.” Now I’m just depressed.

Maybe I should have registered screaming tumor instead…

Help me get a Modbook

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I really want an Axiotron Modbook. Pen and ink and pencils are cool, but for a webcomic they’re not quite the best. I have a Wacom tablet, but the whole drawing somewhere other than where the lines are appearing doesn’t work wonderfully for me.

Unfortunately, the Modbook runs about $2400. So, I plan to do two things:

1. Sell a bunch of stuff to help raise the money for the Modbook. I’ll do a follow up post with some eBay links.

2. Beg for donations. Want to help, donate via PayPal here:

Thinking about premise and story

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

What’s the premise of Screaming Tongue? What should the story be? What’s the schtick? I currently have very little idea. I’ve just been doodling and sketching and wanting to create something new, something regular, something with a purpose, and the Screaming Tongue characters kind of just happened.

Right now, I’m thinking about what’s important for premise and story for a webcomic. What does the form need? Should Screaming Tongue be some sort of modernized Greek Chorus addressing contemporary issues? Should it be some sort of commentary on Web 2.0 issues from a ranting tongue representing all the many knee jerk trolls out there? Should it be the screaming voice of sanity? The jester fool? A total non sequitur?

What’s going to be most expressive and most freeing to me as an artistic type who wants to be more creative while simultaneously serving some larger purpose and hopefully, somewhere along the way, appeal to an audience?

If anybody out there is reading this, I’d love to hear what you think.

Doodling characters

doodles
What do you think of these guys?

I’ve been switching between sketching things and doodling with my Faber Castle mechanical pencil and these ink doodles with a Koh-i-noor ballpoint pen. Whatayathink?

What’s his story? Do you like him? He came from the other day’s doodles.

Update: I inked and colored (I’m not liking the red, but the yellow works):

Andre
I came up with a new character tonight. Andre is French. What do you think? I love his hair.

Karl

Karl
I think I’ve decided to name this one Karl. He’s German.

Characters

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I think I could draw a whole civilization of these guys. Unfortunately, Screaming Tongue himself (bottom left corner) doesn’t color well. I need a much lighter red marker:

Sketching on my Nintendo DS

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Check out this video:

This was done on my Nintendo DS thanks to about $30 spent on a little homebrew enabling card and a very cool homebrew app. I doodled this while watching Lost. I drew it using Colors www.collectingsmiles.com/colors/ and exported as an AVI using Colors Draw masscat.afraid.org/ninds/colors_ds.php. It’s like having a very small, inexpensive Cintiq tablet in my pocket as a portable digital sketch book. The coolest thing is that it creates a movie of your sketching, so you can do things like export the file above and share it on Flickr. Not to mention being able to take a screenshot of any moment in the file’s creation as a different picture. Really amazing.

Stay tuned. New comic at 12:01am, continuing on the story of the current comic.

UPDATE: For some reason Flickr cut the video short. Here’s the full video on Seesmic:

UPDATE: Tom the SkyGuy over on Seesmic asked how I recorded the sketch video, so I answered him in this video, which seems to be a natural partner to this post. Enjoy:

A quick doodle on my DS

New comic coming at 12:01 am.

While you wait, I decided to do some more doodling on my DS. Here it is on Seesmic:

Mad Scientist Rough Sketch

So I sketched this guy today. Actually, had him done more than this shows, but my DS crashed and I lost a bit of the progress. I may go back and revisit later.

Sketching Screaming Tongue

Here’s me sketching Screaming Tongue:

Wacom Cintiq 12WX

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

So, although the Modbook is nice, it’s a bit pricey and I’m nowhere near the goal of getting one. However, a modicum of donations have been coming in and I’m up to $26.55 saved up. Instead of a ModBook, I’ve decided to go for the less than half the cost Wacom Cintiq 12WX, which runs $999.

Help me buy a Cintiq 12WX

$45.67 raised so far

Exclamation Doodle

I drew this last night on the DS:

No new comic tonight…

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

I’ve burned through my backlog of sketches and need to work some new stuff before I release anything new. I don’t want this comic to become “have to post even if it’s crappy” in approach. I’ll make sure to do at least one a week.

Little Green Man

A quick doodle of a little green man on a little brown planet:

Bollywood Bill

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

So for the past 2-3 days, I’ve been sketching this guy:
Bollywood Bill Cosby Inked
Also appears on ’skine.art.

Here’s the pencil sketch version, pre-inking.
Bollywood Bill Cosby Pencil
My friend, Eliot, says that he looks like a “Bollywood Bill Cosby” promoting his new film Ghost Dad. I think he looks like a thinner Glick. As if Glick were the replacement for Jared Fogle in all those Subway ads. Have you ever noticed that Jared still looks fat. I mean looking at him, something about him looks like it is supposed to be fat or it was fat or it still is fat but because of the Subway corporation capturing Doctor Who, locking him in a dungeon, and surgically installing the Tardis in a special magical Subway that Jared ate, now all his fatness is contained in a body much smaller than should be able to hold it, due to a wormhole displacement that you humans can’t really understand, so why should we Time Lords bother explaining?

Updated ComicPress

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

I updated to the newest version of ComicPress, so everything on this site is a little bit nicer. The administrative side is especially nicer with a new nice plugin for uploading comics. Yay!

Genius…

These quotations from Calvin and Hobbes between Calvin and his dad are genius.
